I did expect them to be caught at some point (I mean what else was supposed to happen, they were just going to join the resistance and get away with everything? That does not fit the message of the book at all) but I did not expect it to happen in this way.
Although I did not expect it to happen like this, they were really stupid. Isn't every dwelling supposed to have a telescreen?
They are party members, they are supposed to be better than this, they are supposed to know that there are thought police everywhere, they are supposed to know (and they did realize this) that staying together in a house in the middle of everything is stupid. They have telescreens in their own homes, are the thought police supposed to not notice that among all the normal activity "oh lookey here, an abnormality that it is my job to spot"? The thought police are monitoring, if you don't show up to your own house for days on end they are sure to notice, no matter how many people they are supposed to monitor. Thought police are even more focused on party members, now it is likely O'Brien will be caught as well if he wasn't a secret agent.
I think there is still a possibility that the party had known about Julia the entire time, that they were following her trying to get a link to the resistance. If anything that possibility is stronger now after they both got caught in such a violent way so far after they could've been found. They are living in a building run by a member of the thought police so they could've been caught at any moment, they were just waiting until a connection with the resistance had been made.
Was it coincidence that they ended up in this building? If the party was keeping tabs on Julia, knowing what she was doing and using her like a fishing lure for this purpose did they purposely direct them to this building?
This has kind of been a thought dump but what do you think? Do any of these conjectures sound valid?
They did know it was suicide. They were blinded by l o v e *tear* They prioritized their short-term happiness.
ReplyDeleteBut yeah from a cynical viewpoint they pulled a fat stupid by chillin in Charrington's crib. And by suspiciously going to O'Brien's place together, and basically totally letting their guard down after their first few encounters.
I do think Julia might have been the fishing lure. Winston, for all that he's kind of a sad sack, is a big fish because of his intellect. He's smart enough to understand what the Party is doing in terms of erasure of history.
