Strange bits and irony

When Winston was tortured (for he was tortured a lot), one of the times they threatened him with rats. I think that this is a very strange punishment. Out of all the possible things they could do to him, why is the one that breaks him the threat of rats? Is this really the most scary thing? Yes they made the rats sound scary but in reality the rats were not going to eat him.

He wasn't afraid of death for then the torture would stop and he would "win" against Big Brother since he would die hating him. Again I find this mentality strange but given the circumstances where he was sure that he was going to die it does make a little more sense..

In the Chestnut Tree Café Winston drank Victory Gin. What is Victory Gin? Obviously it is gin but who have they won a victory against? They three nations are fighting a never-ending war just so that they can suppress the citizens and easily brainwash them. Winston hasn't won, he is now at a café where rejected party members attend. He's just been completely brainwashed and now loves Big Brother. Winston also now feels disgusted by Julia and they both admitted to betraying one another. It's anything but a victory, though I guess alcohol does make sense in this situation.

Also, what type of café has alcohol? Café's should have tea, coffee, and steamers (Italian Steamers are so good). If you want alcohol then a bar would be a better option.
