There is no rebellion

With all this hope that exists before getting shutdown, it makes me wonder, is there even a rebellion? There are many individuals that try to rebel or express interest of doing so and there is always talk or suspicion that there is an organized rebellion. When Winston and Julia meet O'Brian they think they are in, then they get busted. Although it is true that they were living in the building of a member of the thought police why didn't they get caught sooner?

O'Brian said he got caught a while ago and that now he worked with the ministry of love. Saying that he got means that he probably (?) was part of a rebellion at some point but since he got caught and allowed to live means he probably wasn't part of a real thing, or he completely sold everyone out immediately.

If there was a rebellion, what are they doing?? The state keeps on hunting down party members who show the slightest sign of betrayal and continually brainwash and sometimes just kill them but we never really see any movement against the party. Winston and Julia set their minds to rebel but nothing came of it, instead they just got brainwashed and completely reset to love big brother.

The closest thing to a successful rebellion shown in the book is when they switch out who they are fighting against and everybody suddenly finds out they are holding the wrong sign.

  1. Sadly, I agree -- I don't think there's a rebellion, any more than there is an actual enemy that Oceania is fighting. It's all made up by the Inner Party.
